Ta-Nehisi Coates Is Reading C.V. Wedgwood's Thirty Years War...

It is an absolutely great book, I think: the story of the harm, the death, the murder, and the tragedy visited on an entire country over an entire generation by the God-maddened, the state-maddened, and the dynasty-maddened. I am happy TNC thinks so too.

Considerably more upbeat--equally good--and much, much shorter is C.V. Wedgwood's William the Silent.
