Admilra Isoroku Yamamoto unveils his plan for the attack on Midway: operation "MI". The operation is designed by its planner, Kameto Kuroshima, to be a complicated ballet to make the Americans think the Japanese force is weak enough to risk their carriers attacking while actually being strong enough to destroy the remaining U.S. Pacific Fleet. Nearly the entire Imperial Navy will burn more fuel in this one operation than in a peacetime year.
