What Is the American Principles Project?
Live from La Farine: How does opposition to contraception and abortion and advocacy of discrimination against homosexuals get tied up with the gold standard and the elimination of the pro-poor redistributionist social ethic of Jesus Christ? It is a mystery.
First, what is the American Principles Project. Well, the American Principles Project's founder is Robert P. George. Enough said.
UPDATE: No, not enough said. Thanks to the Idler for finding this true gem in First Things:
Killing Abortionists: A Symposium: "I am personally opposed to killing abortionists...
:....However, inasmuch as my personal opposition to this practice is rooted in a sectarian (Catholic) religious belief in the sanctity of human life, I am unwilling to impose it on others who may, as a matter of conscience, take a different view. Of course, I am entirely in favor of policies aimed at removing the root causes of violence against abortionists. Indeed, I would go so far as to support mandatory one-week waiting periods, and even nonjudgmental counseling, for people who are contemplating the choice of killing an abortionist. I believe in policies that reduce the urgent need some people feel to kill abortionists while, at the same time, respecting the rights of conscience of my fellow citizens who believe that the killing of abortionists is sometimes a tragic necessity-not a good, but a lesser evil. In short, I am moderately pro-choice...
The American Principles Project claims that it is dedicated to attempting to prohibit contraception and abortion, to discriminating against homosexuals, and to saying "Look! Over there! Halley's Comet!" whenever anybody quotes the fourth chapter of The Gospel According to St. Luke:
When [Jesus] had opened the book [of Esaias], he found the place where it was written:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them:
This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears...
But how does a wish to prohibit contraception and abortion and discriminate against homosexuals get tied up with monetary goldbugism? Can anybody explain this to me?
The American Principles Project says that it:
Mission and Purpose | American Principles Project: "recognizes the dignity of the person...
...as the basis of the founding principles of the United States. We are committed to the declaration made by the Founding Fathers, that we are all ‘created equal, endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights, and among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’... We educate and advocate for public policy solutions that respect and affirm: human life from conception to natural death; the union of one man and one woman as the definition of marriage; the freedom to practice and proclaim religion; authentic economic progress for working Americans; education in service of the comprehensive development of the person; and, the legacy of immigrants in contributing to the American story...
And in economics, they say:
Economics | American Principles Project: "Working Americans across the country are struggling...
...Poor monetary policy is largely responsible. Wages are stagnant. The cost of living is rising and the value of the dollar is eroding, injuring the dignity and economic security of American workers with it.... We demand:... A full audit [of the Fed] by the GAO. A... commission to... explore... monetary policy regimes... and... evaluate which... would best serve working Americans by preserving the value of the dollar. A renewed understanding and appreciation of the classical gold standard’s track record of supporting a rising standard of living, fostering job creation and economic mobility, and promoting equitable prosperity....
There is no greater expression of private property than the preservation of value that is maintained in our currency.... When someone’s property is taken without their consent, this amounts to an attack on this most fundamental right. Today’s monetary policy takes control of our money and hands it to unelected bureaucrats. Our mission is to return control of our money to the people, fix the dollar and restore sound money...
Can anybody reason this out for me? I mean, the Constitution explicitly gives the federal government the power to: "coin money and regulate the value thereof..." It could have required a gold standard. It did not. So how does the gold standard get in there?
Neither does the Constitution nor does the Declaration of Independence call upon YHWH. The Declaration calls upon Nature, upon Nature's God, upon a Creator, and upon Divine Providence. But this is a document of Athens, not of Jerusalem. As is the Constitution
