- "What makes something qualify as a seriously bad idea? In general, to sound serious it must invoke big causes to explain big events — technical matters, like the troubles caused by sharing a currency without a common budget, don’t make the cut. It must also absolve corporate interests and the wealthy from responsibility for what went wrong, and call for hard choices and sacrifice on the part of the little people... :

- @antonmalkin: @Noahpinion Better title: "The Niall is not just a river in Egypt." I apologize in advance for this tweet, but I couldn't resist.
- @noahpinion: @BruceBartlett @delong @jonathanchait @ObsoleteDogma When all you have is a Niall, everything looks like a hammer.
- @aawayne: Basically all those stories last week about Obamacare premiums going nuts were misinformed nonsense. (I know, SHOCK.) http://avalere.com/expertise/managed-care/insights/lowest-cost-exchange-premiums-remain-competitive-in-2016-consumers-may-be-a
- @StevenBrust: @scalzi My name comes up. I am being used as a rolled-up newspaper to swat puppy noses. This makes me happy. Thank you, Eric.
- @StevenBrust: @scalzi That's sweet of you. Serious answer? Louis Bujold covers the same literary ground I do, and SHE IS REALLY FUCKING GOOD.
- @LOLGOP: Jeb Bush invokes The Scarlet Letter (approvingly) as an example of how society had once condemned people for sexual impropriety.
- @kevinmarks: @delong my sense of it was that Bush emphasised scanning and annotating for oneself, and Nelson writing, transcluding and paying in a system.
- @delong: .@PolitiFact Are you following “Clinton Rules” by calling true HRC only “mostly true”? You need to shape up or go home.

- @delong: .@Noahpinion Now you are trolling: you know that Obama speaks in a transnational progressive accent!
- @rauchway: We’ve “no…institutions capable of…providing quality, affordable higher ed…outside public schools.” @rortybomb http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/whats-left-after-higher-education-is-dismantled-20150528
- @delong: .@jbarro GOP doesn’t hate ACA—GOP hates Obama. Had it been signed by Pres Romney, Republicans would be taking victory laps @RameshPonnuru
- @delong: .@porszag & now Richard Just is the editor of the National Journal, infamous for telling people Barack Obama was the most liberal senator…
- @Econ_Marshall: @ddayen It is frustrating to have my usual pro-default, anti-moral-opprobrium stance dragged into the mud by that rather misleading Op/Ed. .@JHWeissmann obliterates that NYT op-ed from the guy who defaulted on his student debts. http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2015/06/08/lee_siegel_new_york_times_op_ed_is_this_the_worst_op_ed_ever_written_about.html
- @delong: .@TimothyNoah1 speaking as the ex-roommate of one of Justice Sotomayor’s clerks, the Rosen hatchet job was absolutely appalling. Leon Wieseltier’s attack on Nate Silver in the Old @tnr was just embarrassing. The Old @tnr’s attempt to put the very sharp Peter Orszag’s views into frame of wanting “less democracy” was unprofessional. The Old @tnr’s habit of setting people like Bill Galston—Bill Galston!—to critique Paul Krugman on economic policy just sad. & then there are the core things wrong with the old @tnr: the racism, the militarism, the habit of smearing people like their ex-editor Andrew Sullivan as “venemous[ly] hostile toward Jews”. Should have been a lot of resignations from Old @tnr over the years. There were rather few.
- @delong: .@Noahpinion 1. I will say that Russ Roberts and company are rapidly teaching me: (a) how much they craft their public and even their private views to suit both their political masters and the ideologies to which they have pledged allegiance, and (b) how much they think we are their mirror images and have as little ethics or self-respect as they do…
- @delong: .@TimothyNoah1 but what, pray tell were the traditions of the Old “even the liberal” @tnr? & which of them were worth defending? After Betsy McCaughey appearing in @tnr was a negative for an article with me. People would have gotten—and did get—more attention from me if they wrote for other things or got fired from @tnr for insufficient kowtowing. It’s easy to have respect for @gabrielsnyder and his editorial choices at the New @tnr. It was not possible to have respect for any any of the many, many editors of the Old @tnr whose principal job qualification was a (temporary) willingness to go the extra mile to cater to the many, many idiosyncratic bigotries of Marty Peretz.
- @delong: .@TimothyNoah1 1. Yes: but I read your stuff because it was by you. Not because it was in @tnr. The editors of @tnr tended to prefer stuff by people like… Lee Siegel. & Being bounced from @tnr was a better signal. @juliaioffe’s profile of Ezra Klein struck me as weird—rather Orwellian “Jukebox Mafia” moments in which I was never sure whether she had just not done her homework or was writing Aesopian hints that she could not publish... cc:@mattyglesias cc: @dsquareddigest
