  • @johnpodesta: "We should do everything we can to make it easier for every citizen to vote. You find a turtle on a fence post it did not get there on its own.... These problems with voting didn't happen by accident.I call on Republicans at all levels of govt... to stop fear mongering about a phantom epidemic of election fraud." @HillaryClinton

  • @delong: .@ModeledBehavior Don’t you think I have better uses of time than to talk to people who claim world is not warming? There are lots of honest conservatives (and non-conservatives) who aren’t bullshit artists to talk to. Russ Roberts--Claiming that global warming has stopped isn’t discussing: it’s bullshitting. And claiming advocates of stabilization policy are such as a Trojan horse to bigger government isn’t discussing: bullshitting. Jesus Christ! Milton Friedman is an advocate of expansionary fiscal and monetary policy—helicopter drops—in deep depressions. Milton Friedman does not call for helicopter drops in great depressions because he wants a larger government. Full stop. Claiming that advocates of helicopter drops are such because they are big-government lovers is the act of either a bullshit artist or a lunatic. You tell me which, @ModeledBehavior. It’s not a matter of my “not willing to be persuaded”. It’s a question of whether Russ Roberts is a bullshit artist, a lunatic, or 3rd category. Happy to engage with 3rd, not with 1st & 2nd. You seem to be saying: “Russ Roberts is only a lunatic or a bullshit artist in his worst moments.” But given the number of non-lunatic non-bullshit artists out there to be engaged with, “Russ Roberts only a lunatic/bullshit artist in his worst moments” just isn’t good enough...
  • @JoeConason: "Hastertland" over "Pelosiville" is how conservative journo @RJohnMickle once framed US politics. And now? http://www.nationalmemo.com/coach-denny-grandma-nancy-and-americas-family-values/
  • @delong: .@JoeConason @RJohnMickle @LOLGOP Holy Jeebus! “The Right Nation” was an awful book!
  • @Econ_Marshall: @rortybomb @Noahpinion @ddayen Because adequate stimulus would have reduced the debt overhang caused by popping bubble, which was worse where finance shenanigans enabled bubble to inflte. This is conv. wisdom now. The reason bubble inflated was an array of financial shenanigans, as @ddayen has chronicled endlessly. Truth: popping bubble left many underwater. Deleveraging was not countered by stimulus. This debate is years out of date. If there's some turf @mattyglesias is defending, it washed away long ago.
  • @radleybalko: The Tiananmen Sq massacre happened 26 year ago today. Powerful video shows Chinese students' fear to acknowledge it: https://vimeo.com/44078865
  • @dsquareddigest: Actually, it surprises and disappoints me that Texas-style prepayment penalty rules haven't had more work done internationally. When you've got a macroprudential rule that worked in face of an oil boom, regulators really ought to have been asking what Texas did right.
  • @tewhalen: @t0nyyates @delong yeah, you're out of compliance with RFC2119. https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2119.txt @t0nyyates: @delong I think escalations of ratings above 'must read' are a grave matter.* @JuddLegum: Ted Cruz mocks Joe Biden on the day before his son's funeral http://thkpr.gs/3665980
  • @hohmeisw: @TheBloggess When I looked back, I saw at times there was only one set of footprints. And Satan said, "There's shit even I'm not into."

  • @johnpodesta: At a time in history when govt should guarantee the right to vote, Republicans fight for the opposite: http://washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2015/06/03/clinton-to-call-for-at-least-20-days-of-early-voting-nationwide/

  • @delong: hasn’t this been true >2003? --> .@tomricks1: “The key to [X in Iraq] is making the Baghdad govt offer the Sunnis a generous accommodation”
  • @noahpinion: @ModeledBehavior @delong Why is that pessimistic?
    • @ModeledBehavior: for economists, and economics educators its pessimistic.
    • @Noahpinion: @ModeledBehavior @delong Who cares? For the sake of the world we should only care about real usable progress.
    • @ModeledBehavior: @Noahpinion @delong of economics educators aren't doing a good job of preparing students for the future, that is wasted real resources
    • @Noahpinion: @ModeledBehavior @delong True. That may be the case whether or not data scientists take over.
    • @delong: @Noahpinion @ModeledBehavior Several issues: (1) do economists actually know things that data scientists, simulation modelers, and historians trying to discover things about the economy would benefit from knowing? (2) Is it potentially useful for data scientists, simulation modelers, historians asking questions about the economy to have a place called economics where they can all meet and talk? (3) does the first year graduate program have anything to add to those future discussions? We here at Berkeley are pushing Chetty's AER paper as the right next step forward. But we are decidedly in the minority...
