  • .@dsquareddigest 1. BtW, the more this develops the smarter you look with your recommendation that Greece follow your “Bertie Wooster” negotiating strategy of maximizing the amount of money flowing into Greece over the next two years by promising the Troika whatever long-run measures it asks for—that trying to win points about notional stocks at the expense of the facts on the ground that are current money flows has been a significant failure… Jul 03, 2015
  • .@dsquareddigest “but it was growing”—you sound like Tim Geithner back during the 2010 “Recovery Summer”. Greece, at 70% of pre-07 trend GDP last December needed a huge (for it) concessional-loan program then. Greece, at 68% of pre-07 trend GDP now, needs a slightly bigger concessional-loan program now. Tsipras and company’s scaring away the confidence fairy has made Greece’s problems slightly worse. ECB, by undershooting Eurozone price target by 5% since 08, has inflicted 10x as much damage as Tsipras. “Greece OK in Dec 14” argument result of elementary confusion between levels and rates of change. cc: @AngelUbidecc: @AngelUbide Jul 03, 2015

  • .@johnmlippert If I may beg a small slice of your attention... I am tracking down John Cochrane's claims that (i) in your December 23, article you were "only... on a hunt for embarrassing quotes", (ii) he had "spent about 10 hours patiently trying to explain some basics" to you, and (iii) you took him out of context with: "'We should have a recession', Cochrane said in November, speaking to students and investors in a conference room.... 'People who spend their lives pounding nails in Nevada need something else to do'." Do you by chance remember the larger context of Cochrane's "pounding nails" comment, and do you have any idea why he now claims that you took him out of context? Or what he thinks the proper context would have been? I would be grateful for any light you can shed on this. Jun 29, 2015
