Ann Leckie**: The 10 Best Science Fiction Books: "These are ten of my favorites.... If your favorites aren't here...

...either I had to leave them off because I'm only doing ten, or else we have different favorites. Which is the way things should be! 1. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.... 2. Solaris by Stanislaw Lem.... 3. The Secret of Sinharat / People of the Talisman by Leigh Brackett.... 4. The Star King by Jack Vance.... 5. The Zero Stone by Andre Norton.... 6. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin.... 7. Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky.... 8. Neuromancer by William Gibson.... 9. Foreigner by C.J. Cherryh.... 10. Embassytown by China Mieville

But... but... but... C.J. Cherryh's first three "Morgaine" novels are better Leigh Brackett than any of Leigh Bracket except for The Ginger Star (and the screenplay for The Empire Strikes Back). It's unfair to pick Foreigner over them (and over Downbelow Station) just because tea!
